In 2005 the Baltimore-based development company Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse, Inc. granted me unlimited access to Royal Mills in West Warwick, RI. Visiting the mill on weekends for many months, working in temperatures ranging from 9 degrees to 95, I slowly assembled a suite of 54 black-and-white large-format photographs of Royal Mills, including the Ace Dye (weave shed) building, machine shop, dam, and power canals. I find Royal Mills a remarkable environment, a man-made industrial canyon on the Pawtuxet River that powerfully evokes the former industrial pride of Rhode Island, the Pawtuxet valley, and West Warwick.
